Great Siege of Malta

The Great Siege of Malta was a four-month Ottoman campaign against the island in 1565, repelled by the Knights Hospitaller and Maltese defenders.

Fort Saint Elmo: A fortified position at the entrance to Malta’s Grand Harbour, captured by Ottoman forces in June 1565 after weeks of bombardment. Its fall opened the harbor approaches but cost the Ottomans heavily in men and time.
Jean Parisot de Valette: A French-born Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller who led Malta’s defense during the 1565 siege. His command coordinated the island’s defense and became inseparable from the siege’s outcome.
Ottoman–Habsburg wars: A series of conflicts between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg dynasties over territory and influence. The siege was one episode in their struggle for control of the Mediterranean.
Siege of Malta (1940–1942): A prolonged Axis air and naval campaign against Malta during the Second World War. This later siege gave Malta another defining experience of surviving an assault by a larger power.
Fort Saint Angelo: A fortified headland in Birgu that served as a principal stronghold of the Knights Hospitaller during the siege. Its guns and defenders helped protect Birgu and frustrate Ottoman attacks across the harbor.

Siege of Tripoli (1551): An Ottoman-led attack in 1551 that captured Tripoli from the Knights Hospitaller. The loss of Tripoli preceded the Hospitallers’ establishment of their principal base on Malta.
Valletta: Malta’s capital city, founded by the Knights Hospitaller after the Great Siege and named for Jean Parisot de Valette. The siege prompted construction of a new fortified city on the Sciberras Peninsula.
Birgu: A fortified town on Malta’s Grand Harbour, known during the siege as the Hospitaller stronghold of Vittoriosa. Ottoman assaults against Birgu tested the main defended position after Fort Saint Elmo fell.
Piyale Pasha: An Ottoman admiral who commanded naval forces during the Great Siege of Malta. His fleet transported and supported the Ottoman expedition, while coordination with the land command proved difficult.
