Siege of Odessa

The Siege of Odessa was a 73-day battle in 1941 in which Romanian and German forces encircled the Soviet-held Black Sea port before Soviet forces evacuated it by sea.

Odessa: A port city on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea, now in Ukraine. Its harbor and urban defenses shaped the battle and enabled evacuation by sea.
Operation Barbarossa: The German-led invasion of the Soviet Union that began on 22 June 1941. Its southern advance brought Axis forces toward Odessa.
Georgy Zhukov: A Soviet general who held senior commands during World War II. He helped organize Odessa’s initial defenses before taking another command.
Transnistria Governorate: A Romanian-administered territory established during World War II in occupied Soviet Ukraine. After Odessa fell, the city became the governorate’s administrative center.
