Sierra Madre Occidental

The Sierra Madre Occidental is a major mountain range in western Mexico, extending south from the U.S. border through Sonora, Chihuahua, and Durango. Its rugged highlands include deep canyons and extensive volcanic formations.

Sierra Madre mountain system: A system of mountain ranges running along Mexico’s western, eastern, and southern margins. The Occidental is the western branch of this broader Mexican mountain system.
Ignimbrite flare-up: An episode of widespread explosive eruptions that deposited enormous volumes of hot ash-flow deposits. Repeated eruptions built extensive volcanic plateaus across the range.
Yaqui River: A river in Sonora that flows west from the Sierra Madre Occidental to the Gulf of California. Its watershed carries mountain runoff toward Sonora’s agricultural lowlands.
Barranca del Cobre: A system of major canyons in Chihuahua commonly known in English as Copper Canyon. Its immense canyon landscapes showcase erosion within the range.
Mexican Plateau: A broad elevated region occupying much of central and northern Mexico. The range’s eastern slopes descend toward this plateau.
Caldera: A large volcanic depression formed when a magma chamber empties and its roof collapses. Caldera-forming eruptions contributed to the region’s extensive ignimbrite deposits.
Fuerte River: A river in northwestern Mexico that drains the Sierra Madre Occidental into the Gulf of California. Its flow links the range’s highlands to coastal water systems.
Basaseachic Falls National Park: A protected area in Chihuahua containing Basaseachic Falls and surrounding mountain forest. The park preserves a dramatic waterfall and upland habitats.
Sierra Madre Occidental volcanic province: A vast region of volcanic rocks formed largely during the Cenozoic in western Mexico. Its volcanic rocks make up much of the range’s high terrain.
Volcanic plateau: An elevated, broad landform built or covered by successive volcanic flows and deposits. Volcanic rocks form much of the Occidental’s highland surface.
