Sikkim

Sikkim is a Himalayan state in northeastern India, bordered by West Bengal to the south and Nepal, Bhutan, and China to the west, east, and north.

Kangchenjunga: Kangchenjunga is the world’s third-highest mountain, on the border between Nepal and India. The massif dominates Sikkim’s northern skyline and holds deep religious significance.
Kingdom of Sikkim: The Kingdom of Sikkim was a Himalayan monarchy that existed from the seventeenth century until 1975. The present state occupies the territory of this former kingdom.
Khangchendzonga National Park: Khangchendzonga National Park is a protected area in Sikkim encompassing high mountains, glaciers, forests, and alpine habitats. Its landscapes anchor both biodiversity protection and Sikkim’s mountain tourism.
West Bengal: West Bengal is an Indian state extending from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal. It is Sikkim’s southern neighbor and provides its main overland link to the rest of India.
Teesta River: The Teesta is a transboundary river flowing through Sikkim and West Bengal into Bangladesh. Its valleys shape Sikkim’s settlement, transport routes, and hydropower development.
Chogyal: Chogyal was the hereditary title of Sikkim’s Buddhist monarchs. The monarchy’s authority and eventual abolition are central to Sikkim’s modern political history.
Sikkim Organic Mission: The Sikkim Organic Mission is a government initiative that supported the state’s transition to certified organic agriculture. It made organic farming a defining state policy and economic strategy.
Bhutan: Bhutan is a landlocked Himalayan kingdom east of Sikkim. The two neighbors share mountain environments but have distinct political histories.
Lepcha people: The Lepcha are an Indigenous people of the eastern Himalayas, especially Sikkim and neighboring regions. Their traditions and language are among the oldest cultural inheritances of Sikkim.
Treaty of Tumlong: The 1861 Treaty of Tumlong established Sikkim as a British protectorate. It began a long period in which Sikkim’s sovereignty was constrained by external powers.
