Silas

Silas, also called Silvanus, was an early Christian missionary and companion of Paul. He appears in the Acts of the Apostles and several New Testament letters.

Paul the Apostle: An early Christian missionary and writer whose letters became part of the New Testament. Silas traveled and preached with Paul during missionary journeys described in Acts.
Council of Jerusalem: A meeting of early Christian leaders that addressed whether Gentile converts had to observe the Mosaic law. Silas carried its decision from Jerusalem to the church in Antioch.
Acts of the Apostles: A New Testament narrative of the early Christian movement from Jerusalem to Rome. It supplies the fullest account of Silas’s travels, preaching, and imprisonment.
Silvanus: A name appearing in several New Testament letters, commonly identified with the Silas of Acts. The forms Silas and Silvanus are generally treated as names for the same person.
Timothy: An early Christian missionary and coworker of Paul, addressed in two New Testament letters. Timothy joined Paul and Silas during the mission through Macedonia.
Philippi: An ancient Macedonian city where Paul established an early Christian community. Acts places Silas’s imprisonment and release during the mission in this city.
First Epistle to the Thessalonians: A letter from Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the Christian community in Thessalonica. Its opening names Silvanus among the letter’s senders.
Silas (seventy disciple): A figure included in later Christian lists of the seventy disciples, distinct in tradition from the New Testament missionary Silas. Later traditions about another Silas can be confused with the companion of Paul.
Peter the Apostle: One of Jesus’s earliest disciples and a leading figure in the first Christian communities. First Peter names Silvanus as the letter’s bearer or assistant.
Thessalonica: An ancient Macedonian city and an early center of Pauline Christian activity. Silas helped Paul preach there after leaving Philippi.
