Silicon nitride

Silicon nitride is an inorganic ceramic compound, usually Si₃N₄, combining high hardness, strength, and thermal resistance with electrical insulation.

Silicon: A chemical element with atomic number 14, widely used in semiconductors and ceramics. Silicon atoms form the structural framework of silicon nitride.
Sintering: A process that bonds powder particles by heating them, usually below their melting point. Sintering turns silicon nitride powder into dense engineering components.
Silicon nitride ball bearing: A rolling-element bearing that uses silicon nitride balls, often with steel races. Its balls are lighter and more wear-resistant than conventional steel balls.
Silicon carbide: A hard ceramic compound of silicon and carbon, used in abrasives and high-temperature components. It competes with silicon nitride in wear-resistant and high-temperature applications.
Nitrogen: A chemical element with atomic number 7 that forms strong bonds in many compounds. Nitrogen bonds with silicon to produce the ceramic’s robust network.
Hot isostatic pressing: A densification process that applies high gas pressure and temperature uniformly to a material. It can reduce pores and improve the strength of silicon nitride ceramics.
Gas turbine: An engine that produces power by expanding hot gases through a turbine. Silicon nitride has been studied for turbine parts exposed to high temperatures.
Alumina: Aluminum oxide, a widely used ceramic valued for hardness and electrical insulation. Alumina is generally less costly, while silicon nitride offers greater fracture resistance.
Covalent bond: A chemical bond formed when atoms share electron pairs. Strong silicon–nitrogen covalent bonds underpin the material’s hardness and heat resistance.
Liquid-phase sintering: A sintering process in which a transient liquid helps powder particles rearrange and densify. Additives create a liquid phase that enables silicon nitride to densify.
