Silicon tetrachloride

Silicon tetrachloride is a colorless, volatile liquid with formula SiCl₄. It is a feedstock for high-purity silicon and other silicon compounds.

Hydrolysis: A chemical reaction in which a substance reacts with water, often breaking chemical bonds. Moisture rapidly converts SiCl₄ into silica and hydrogen chloride.
Siemens process: An industrial method for producing high-purity polysilicon by depositing silicon from chlorosilane gases onto heated rods. SiCl₄ participates in chlorosilane chemistry used to recover and deposit semiconductor-grade silicon.
Silicon: A chemical element with atomic number 14, widely used in semiconductors and silicate minerals. Silicon is the central atom whose chlorination creates SiCl₄.
Silicon tetrabromide: A colorless liquid with formula SiBr₄, formed by silicon bonded to four bromine atoms. Replacing chlorine with heavier bromine changes volatility and physical properties.

Chlorine: A reactive halogen element with atomic number 17, commonly found as diatomic chlorine gas. Four chlorine atoms surround silicon in the tetrachloride molecule.
Germanium tetrachloride: A volatile liquid with formula GeCl₄, used in optical materials and germanium processing. It is a close group-14 analogue with different applications and material properties.
Corrosive substance: A material that chemically damages living tissue or other materials on contact. SiCl₄ and its hydrolysis products can damage skin, eyes, and equipment.
