Silicon

Silicon is a chemical element with symbol Si and atomic number 14. Its abundance, four valence electrons, and ability to form stable compounds make it central to minerals, glass, and semiconductor technology.

Silicon atom: An atom with 14 protons and electron configuration [Ne] 3s² 3p². Four outer-shell electrons let silicon form covalent bonds and support semiconductor behavior.
Band gap: The energy range separating a solid’s occupied valence states from its conduction states. Silicon’s band gap permits useful control of carrier populations at ordinary operating temperatures.
Integrated circuit: An electronic circuit whose components are fabricated together on a small semiconductor substrate. Silicon wafers provide the platform for most mass-produced integrated circuits.
Jöns Jacob Berzelius: A Swedish chemist who isolated elemental silicon in 1824. Berzelius established silicon as an element by preparing an impure elemental form.
Silicon crystal structure: The arrangement in which each silicon atom forms four covalent bonds in a diamond-cubic lattice. This lattice gives crystalline silicon the electronic properties used in chips.
P–n junction: A boundary between p-type and n-type semiconductor regions that creates a charge-depleted zone and rectifying behavior. Silicon junctions form the basis of diodes, transistors, and solar cells.
Silicon wafer: A thin, polished disc of crystalline silicon used as a substrate for semiconductor devices. Device fabrication begins by patterning layers and regions across these wafers.
Antoine Lavoisier: A French chemist whose work helped establish modern chemistry and chemical nomenclature. Lavoisier recognized silica as likely containing an undiscovered element, though he did not isolate it.
Silicate minerals: Minerals built from silicon–oxygen units, often combined with metal cations. Most crustal silicon occurs bound in this broad family rather than as pure element.
Metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor: A transistor in which a gate voltage controls a conductive channel separated from the gate by an insulating layer. MOSFETs exploit silicon channels and silicon dioxide insulation in modern integrated circuits.
