Silk Road transmission of Buddhism

The movement of Buddhist teachings, texts, art, and institutions from India through Central Asia into China and other regions along interconnected trade routes.

Buddhist missionaries: People who travel to teach Buddhism and establish or support Buddhist communities. Missionaries helped carry Buddhist teachings beyond India along routes linking trading settlements.
Gautama Buddha: The teacher whose teachings founded Buddhism in northern India in the fifth century BCE. The transmission carried traditions ultimately rooted in the teachings attributed to him.
Kumārajīva: A fourth- and fifth-century Buddhist monk and translator whose Chinese versions shaped East Asian Buddhism. His translations brought influential Indian and Central Asian texts into Chinese.
Mogao Caves: A complex of Buddhist cave temples near Dunhuang in China, decorated and used from the fourth century onward. The caves preserve evidence of Buddhist worship at a key Silk Road junction.
Chinese Buddhism: Buddhist traditions that developed in China through the translation and interpretation of Buddhist teachings. It grew from imported teachings adapted to Chinese languages, institutions, and intellectual traditions.
Kucha: An ancient oasis kingdom in the Tarim Basin, known for its Buddhist monasteries and cave art. Kucha became a major Buddhist center on the northern Silk Road into China.
Maurya Empire: An ancient Indian empire that ruled much of the subcontinent from the fourth to second centuries BCE. Ashoka’s patronage helped Buddhism spread beyond its early communities in India.
Xuanzang: A seventh-century Chinese Buddhist monk who traveled to India and translated scriptures after returning to China. His journey and translations linked Chinese Buddhist scholarship with Indian sources.
Dunhuang manuscripts: A large collection of manuscripts and printed texts found in a sealed cave near Dunhuang in the early twentieth century. Their languages and contents document Buddhist learning across Silk Road communities.
Mahayana: A broad Buddhist tradition emphasizing the bodhisattva ideal and a large body of additional scriptures. Mahayana texts and communities traveled widely through Central Asia into China.
