Sillimanite

Sillimanite is an aluminium silicate mineral with the formula Al₂SiO₅. It is one of three polymorphs of this composition and typically forms in high-temperature metamorphic rocks.

Al₂SiO₅: Aluminium silicate is a chemical compound with the formula Al₂SiO₅. Sillimanite is one crystalline form of this shared chemical composition.
Metamorphic facies: Metamorphic facies are groups of mineral assemblages associated with particular ranges of pressure and temperature. Sillimanite-bearing assemblages identify high-temperature metamorphic conditions.

Crystal structure: A crystal structure is the ordered three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in a crystalline material. Sillimanite’s atomic arrangement distinguishes it from other Al₂SiO₅ polymorphs.
Geothermobarometry: Geothermobarometry estimates the temperature and pressure recorded by rocks using mineral equilibria or compositions. Sillimanite-bearing reactions can help constrain metamorphic conditions.
