Silt

Silt is a mineral sediment and soil particle-size fraction finer than sand and coarser than clay. It commonly settles from water and can be transported by wind.

Wentworth scale: A grain-size classification that divides sediment into gravel, sand, silt, and clay ranges. It sets the standard size boundaries used to classify silt.
Suspended load: Sediment particles carried within a flowing fluid rather than along its bed. Silt commonly travels within flowing water as suspended load.
Silt loam: A soil textural class containing a high proportion of silt and smaller proportions of sand and clay. It shows how abundant silt shapes a named agricultural soil texture.
Loess Plateau: A region of north-central China mantled by deep windblown loess deposits. Its thick silt-rich deposits illustrate how loess can shape a landscape.
Eutrophication: The enrichment of water with nutrients, often causing excessive plant and algal growth. Silt can transport phosphorus and other nutrients into lakes and rivers.
Sand: A sediment and soil particle-size fraction coarser than silt and finer than gravel. Its larger grains mark silt’s upper size boundary.
Settling velocity: The rate at which a particle descends through a fluid under gravity. Silt settles more slowly than sand, helping it travel farther in water.
Soil erosion: The removal of soil by water, wind, ice, or gravity. Erosion can detach silt and carry it into fields and waterways.
Mississippi River Delta: A river delta formed where the Mississippi River deposits sediment into the Gulf of Mexico. Its fine sediment includes silt carried downstream by the river.
Sedimentation: The settling and accumulation of particles carried by a fluid. Silt accumulation can bury habitats and alter river or lake beds.
