Knowra Simla Agreement Simla Agreement The 1972 agreement between India and Pakistan pledged peaceful resolution of disputes and designated their Kashmir ceasefire line as the Line of Control.
Line of Control : The military control line separating Indian- and Pakistani-administered parts of Kashmir. The agreement renamed the 1949 ceasefire line and committed both states to respect it.
Bilateralism : The conduct of relations or negotiations directly between two parties, without a third party as mediator. The agreement committed India and Pakistan to settle disputes through direct bilateral negotiations.
Partition of India : The 1947 division of British India into the independent states of India and Pakistan. Partition created the two states whose unresolved disputes the Simla Agreement addressed.
United Nations Security Council Resolution 47 : A 1948 United Nations Security Council resolution recommending measures, including a plebiscite, to address the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. Unlike this international resolution, the Simla Agreement emphasized bilateral settlement between India and Pakistan.
Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 : The war between India and Pakistan that ended with the creation of Bangladesh and Pakistan’s surrender in East Pakistan. The agreement followed the war and addressed its aftermath, including prisoners and territorial withdrawals.
Peaceful dispute resolution : The settlement of disputes through negotiation, mediation, arbitration, or other nonviolent means. Its central pledge was to resolve differences by peaceful means rather than force.
First Kashmir War : The 1947–1948 war between India and Pakistan over the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. The war produced the ceasefire line that the Simla Agreement later renamed.
Lahore Declaration : The 1999 declaration in which India and Pakistan pledged peaceful dialogue and measures to reduce nuclear risks. It renewed bilateral commitments decades later, but did not replace the Simla Agreement’s framework.
Bangladesh Liberation War : The 1971 conflict in which East Pakistan became the independent state of Bangladesh. The war’s outcome created the political conditions for India and Pakistan to negotiate at Simla.
Ceasefire line : A line separating forces where a ceasefire has halted fighting, without necessarily establishing an international border. The agreement converted the Kashmir ceasefire line into the Line of Control.
