Simon van der Meer

Simon van der Meer (1925–2011) was a Dutch accelerator physicist who invented stochastic cooling, a technique that made intense antiproton beams practical at CERN. He shared the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physics with Carlo Rubbia.

Stochastic cooling: A method that reduces a particle beam’s spread by measuring random deviations and applying corrective electromagnetic kicks. Van der Meer invented this technique to concentrate antiprotons for collider experiments.
W boson: A massive elementary particle that mediates the weak interaction and carries either positive or negative electric charge. Its discovery in 1983 at CERN demonstrated the reach of the collider enabled by antiproton cooling.
Delft University of Technology: A Dutch public technical university founded in Delft in 1842. Van der Meer studied engineering there before joining CERN.
Fermilab Antiproton Source: A Fermilab complex that produced, accumulated, and cooled antiprotons for the Tevatron collider. It applied stochastic cooling to sustain the antiproton supply for high-energy collisions.
