Simon Wiesenthal

Simon Wiesenthal (1908–2005) was an Austrian Holocaust survivor who documented Nazi crimes and pursued the identification and prosecution of perpetrators after the war.

Adolf Eichmann: A senior Nazi official who organized the deportation of European Jews and was captured in Argentina in 1960. Wiesenthal helped supply information that contributed to Eichmann’s identification and capture.
Documentation of Nazi crimes: The collection and preservation of evidence about crimes committed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators. Wiesenthal gathered records and witness accounts to identify perpetrators and support investigations.
Nazi war crimes: Mass atrocities and other grave crimes committed by Nazi Germany and its collaborators during the Second World War. These crimes were the subject of the evidence Wiesenthal sought to preserve and bring before courts.
Tuviah Friedman: A Jewish Holocaust survivor and researcher who independently pursued former Nazi perpetrators after the war. Friedman’s overlapping pursuit of Nazi fugitives produced rivalry over credit and methods.
Fritz Bauer: A German Jewish prosecutor who helped bring Nazi perpetrators to trial and secretly informed Israel about Adolf Eichmann’s location. Bauer’s independent effort to secure Eichmann’s capture differed from Wiesenthal’s public role.
Nazi hunters: Individuals who sought to identify and locate former Nazi perpetrators for investigation or prosecution. Wiesenthal became one of the best-known figures associated with this postwar pursuit.
Holocaust denial: The false claim that the Holocaust did not occur or was substantially misrepresented. Wiesenthal’s documentation and testimony directly opposed efforts to erase or distort Nazi crimes.
Kurt Waldheim controversy: The international dispute over Austrian president Kurt Waldheim’s wartime service and his account of it. Wiesenthal criticized the World Jewish Congress’s allegations about Waldheim, prompting controversy over his stance.
Beate Klarsfeld: A German-French activist who pursued Nazi fugitives and campaigned for their prosecution. Like Wiesenthal, Klarsfeld made locating and prosecuting Nazi perpetrators a sustained public campaign.
Extradition: The formal transfer of a person from one jurisdiction to another for prosecution or punishment. Locating a suspect abroad was only one step; legal transfer could determine whether trial was possible.
