Simultaneous contrast

Simultaneous contrast is a change in a region’s perceived color or brightness caused by the colors or brightnesses surrounding it. The effect makes identical regions appear different in different contexts.

Lateral inhibition: A neural process in which active neurons reduce the activity of neighboring neurons. Retinal inhibition between neighboring regions helps explain why boundaries appear more contrasting.
Chevreul illusion: An optical illusion in which adjacent gray bands appear lighter or darker near their shared borders. It shows simultaneous luminance contrast across adjoining bands.
Michel Eugène Chevreul: A French chemist whose work on color contrast influenced nineteenth-century art and design. His study of adjacent colors gave the effect an influential early account.
Impressionism: A nineteenth-century art movement that emphasized changing light and perceptual effects through visible brushwork. Impressionist painters used adjacent hues to intensify perceived color relationships.
Retinal ganglion cell: A retina neuron that sends visual signals to the brain through the optic nerve. Center-surround receptive fields in these cells encode local differences in light.
Checker shadow illusion: An illusion in which identical gray squares appear different because one lies within a depicted shadow. Its context reverses a simple local contrast judgment through inferred illumination.
