Singing Revolution

A largely nonviolent Estonian independence movement in the late 1980s and early 1990s, marked by mass singing and public demonstrations against Soviet rule.

Perestroika: Mikhail Gorbachev’s program of economic restructuring and political reform in the Soviet Union. Its loosening of Soviet controls created space for Estonian public mobilization.
Tallinn Song Festival Grounds: An outdoor venue in Tallinn that hosts Estonia’s large-scale song festivals. Mass singing at this site made cultural gatherings a visible arena for political expression.
