Sino-Soviet split

The political and ideological rupture between the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China that began in the 1950s and deepened through the 1960s, ending their alliance.

Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Alliance: A 1950 treaty establishing an alliance between the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China. The alliance’s founding agreement framed later disputes over Soviet influence and Chinese sovereignty.
Soviet advisors in China: Soviet specialists sent to assist China’s industrial, scientific, and military development. Their withdrawal in 1960 abruptly disrupted projects and made the split tangible.
Sino-American rapprochement: The improvement of relations between the United States and China that began in the early 1970s. The split helped create strategic space for China to engage Washington against Soviet power.

Sino-Soviet border conflict: Armed clashes between Chinese and Soviet forces along their disputed border in 1969. The ideological rupture culminated in direct military confrontation.
Nixon’s 1972 visit to China: The first visit to China by a sitting United States president, opening a new phase in bilateral relations. The visit made the strategic consequences of the split visible in high-level diplomacy.
Sino-Albanian split: The rupture between China and Albania after their close alliance deteriorated in the late 1970s. It reversed the earlier alignment in which Albania had supported China against the Soviet Union.
Liu Shaoqi: A Chinese Communist leader who served as president of the People’s Republic of China from 1959 to 1968. His 1960 Moscow negotiations exposed the depth of Chinese-Soviet disagreement.
