Sir George Stokes

George Gabriel Stokes (1819–1903) was an Irish mathematician and physicist whose work shaped fluid mechanics, optics, and mathematical physics.

Navier–Stokes equations: Partial differential equations describing the motion of viscous fluids. Stokes helped derive the equations that now bear his name.
Stokes' law: A formula for the viscous drag on a small sphere moving slowly through a fluid. It quantifies the resistance experienced by a sphere in creeping flow.
William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin: A mathematical physicist and engineer who helped establish thermodynamics and electrical science. Kelvin was a contemporary whose work intersected with Stokes’s mathematical physics.
Stokes number: A dimensionless quantity comparing a particle’s response time with a characteristic flow time. It extends Stokes’s work on particle motion through fluids into a standard flow parameter.
Viscosity: A fluid’s resistance to deformation and flow. Stokes’s fluid mechanics analyzed how viscosity governs motion.
Stokes' theorem: A theorem relating the integral of a differential form over a boundary to its integral over the surface. This central result connects circulation around a boundary with curl across a surface.
James Clerk Maxwell: A Scottish physicist whose equations unified electricity, magnetism, and light. Maxwell corresponded with Stokes and drew on the mathematical physics of their era.
Stokes unit: A centimetre–gram–second unit of kinematic viscosity, equal to one square centimetre per second. The unit commemorates Stokes’s contributions to fluid mechanics.
Differential equations: Equations relating a function to one or more of its derivatives. Differential equations provided tools for Stokes’s mathematical physics.
Stokes shift: The difference between the absorption and emission wavelengths of a luminescent substance. Stokes explained why fluorescence is generally emitted at longer wavelengths than it is absorbed.
