Knowra Sistan Basin Sistan Basin The Sistan Basin is an endorheic drainage basin spanning southwestern Afghanistan and southeastern Iran. Its rivers feed the Hamun wetlands, chiefly through the Helmand River, with no outlet to the sea.
Helmand River : A river rising in the Hindu Kush that flows southwest across Afghanistan toward the Sistan Basin. It supplies most of the basin’s inflow and sustains the Hamun wetlands.
Sistan dust storms : Dust storms generated in and around the Sistan region, especially when exposed lakebeds and wetlands dry out. Drying in the basin exposes sediment that can fuel severe regional dust events.
Kuh-e Khwaja : A basalt hill rising from the Hamun landscape in Sistan, Iran, with archaeological and religious remains. This landmark overlooks the wetlands and preserves evidence of ancient settlement.
Helmand River water dispute : A long-running disagreement between Afghanistan and Iran over the allocation and delivery of Helmand River water. The dispute concerns the main river feeding the Sistan Basin and its wetlands.
