Sit-and-wait predation

Sit-and-wait predation is a hunting strategy in which a predator stays in one place and attacks prey that comes within reach. It contrasts with active searching, which expends effort locating prey.

Ambush predator: An animal that captures prey through surprise attacks from concealment or a stationary position. Sit-and-wait predators are a major kind of ambush predator.
Anglerfish: A group of deep-sea fishes, many of which use a modified fin spine as a prey-attracting lure. Some species wait in darkness and lure prey within striking distance.
Active predation: Predation in which an animal searches for prey through directed movement. It contrasts directly with waiting for prey to approach.
Foraging efficiency: The amount of food an organism obtains relative to the time and energy it spends foraging. Waiting can save search costs but may reduce the rate of prey encounters.
Crypsis: An organism's ability to avoid detection by blending into its surroundings or resembling another object. Camouflage can let a stationary predator remain unnoticed until prey approaches.
Praying mantis: A predatory insect with grasping forelegs adapted to seizing prey. Many mantises remain motionless before snatching nearby insects.
Pursuit predation: A hunting strategy in which a predator chases detected prey to capture it. The predator follows prey rather than remaining in ambush.
Predation risk: The probability that an organism will be attacked by a predator over a specified period or situation. Prey may face danger concentrated around the sites where ambush predators wait.
Predator-prey interaction: An ecological relationship in which one organism captures and consumes another. The strategy shapes how predators encounter and capture prey.
Trapdoor spider: A spider that lives in a silk-lined burrow closed by a hinged, camouflaged door. It waits beside its burrow entrance and grabs prey passing nearby.
