Knowra Situationist International Situationist International The Situationist International was an avant-garde organization founded in 1957 that joined artists and political theorists in opposing capitalist consumer society through cultural critique and experimentation.
Constructed situation : A deliberately created moment or environment designed to transform everyday life and social relations. The group proposed constructed situations as alternatives to passive routines shaped by consumer society.
Lettrist International : A Paris-based avant-garde group founded in 1952 that experimented with urban life, film, and radical politics. Its members and practices formed the Situationist International’s immediate precursor.
Guy Debord : A French writer and filmmaker who became the Situationist International’s leading theorist and strategist. Debord authored its most influential critique of the spectacle and directed much of its political development.
May 1968 events in France : A period of student protests, strikes, and social unrest in France during May and June 1968. Situationist slogans and ideas circulated during the unrest, though the group did not direct it.
Socialist realism : An officially prescribed artistic style that presents socialist society and its ideals in accessible forms. Situationists rejected its fixed images and institutional control as another limit on artistic freedom.
Détournement : The reuse and alteration of existing cultural materials to redirect their meaning toward a critical purpose. Situationists turned advertising and other familiar images against the consumer culture that produced them.
CoBrA : An avant-garde artists’ group active from 1948 to 1951, named for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. Its international, anti-academic artistic outlook helped shape the milieu from which Situationism emerged.
Michèle Bernstein : A French writer and Situationist who contributed to the group’s publications and early organization. Her writing and editorial work helped establish the group’s public voice.
Situationist Times : An international avant-garde magazine published by Jacqueline de Jong from 1962 to 1967. The magazine carried Situationist debates into a broader network after de Jong left the group.
Surrealism : An artistic and literary movement that explored dreams, the unconscious, and unexpected juxtapositions. The Situationists inherited surrealism’s revolt against ordinary life but criticized its retreat into artistic identity.
