Knowra Six Dharmas of Naropa Six Dharmas of Naropa A set of six advanced tantric meditation practices in Tibetan Buddhism, also known as the Six Yogas of Naropa. They develop and use subtle-body experience toward the realization of clear light and liberation.
Tummo : A tantric meditation practice that generates inner heat through breath, visualization, and subtle-body techniques. It is commonly treated as the foundational practice among the six.
Vajrayana : A form of Buddhism that uses tantric methods, including mantra, visualization, and ritual, to pursue awakening. The Six Dharmas belong to this broader Buddhist vehicle.
Naropa : An Indian Buddhist tantric master traditionally dated to the eleventh century and associated with the Six Dharmas. The practices take their name from this influential teacher.
Tibetan dream yoga : A Tibetan Buddhist discipline that uses lucid dreaming to cultivate awareness and spiritual insight. It is a broader practice tradition that includes methods related to one of the six.
Illusory body : A tantric practice that recognizes waking experience and the body as illusory appearances. It develops insight into the insubstantial nature of appearances.
Tantra : A body of esoteric religious practices and texts that employ ritual, visualization, mantra, and initiation. Their methods are rooted in tantric systems and transmission.
Tilopa : An Indian Buddhist tantric master regarded in Kagyu tradition as Naropa’s principal teacher. Kagyu accounts trace the practices’ transmission through Naropa to Tilopa.
Lucid dreaming : Dreaming in which a person knows they are dreaming while the dream continues. Dream yoga uses lucid awareness but gives it a tantric soteriological purpose.
Clear light : A meditation practice that recognizes the mind’s luminous, nonconceptual awareness, especially in deep sleep or at death. The six practices aim to recognize clear light in ordinary and extraordinary states.
Subtle body : A tantric model of channels, winds, and vital essences underlying embodied experience. Inner heat and several other practices work with this model.
