Six Dynasties

A period in Chinese history, roughly 220–589 CE, when six successive dynasties ruled from Jiankang, present-day Nanjing.

Eastern Wu: A state of the Three Kingdoms period that ruled southeastern China from 222 to 280. It was the first of the six dynasties centered at Jiankang.
Jiankang: An ancient city on the site of modern Nanjing that served as a capital of several southern regimes. It was the shared political center used to define the Six Dynasties.
Wang Dao: A Jin dynasty statesman who helped establish the Eastern Jin government in the south. He organized elite support for the relocated court at Jiankang.
Buddhism in China: The development of Buddhist institutions, teachings, and practices within Chinese society. The era saw Buddhism gain patrons, monasteries, and a lasting southern presence.
Northern and Southern Dynasties: A period from 420 to 589 when northern and southern Chinese regimes ruled simultaneously. It frames the Six Dynasties within the wider era of political division.
Eastern Jin: A dynasty that ruled southern China from 317 to 420 after the Western Jin collapsed. Its relocation south established the political pattern of the Six Dynasties.
Three Kingdoms: A period from 220 to 280 when Wei, Shu, and Wu competed to rule China. The period opens amid the fragmentation that followed the Han dynasty.
Xie An: An Eastern Jin statesman who led the government during the defeat of Former Qin at the Battle of Fei River. His leadership preserved the southern regime against a major northern invasion.
Chinese calligraphy: The art and practice of writing Chinese characters with brush and ink. Six Dynasties styles, especially those associated with Wang Xizhi, shaped later standards.
Northern Wei: A dynasty founded by the Xianbei Tuoba that ruled much of northern China from 386 to 534. Its powerful northern court provides the clearest counterpart to Jiankang’s southern regimes.
