Skate

A skate is a cartilaginous fish with a flattened body, enlarged pectoral fins, and a tail usually distinct from a stingray’s whip-like tail. Most species live on the seafloor and lay egg cases.

Cartilaginous fish: A fish whose skeleton is made primarily of cartilage rather than bone. Skates belong to this vertebrate group, alongside sharks and rays.
Undulatory locomotion: Movement produced by waves of bending that travel along an animal’s body or fins. Many skates propel themselves by sending waves along their pectoral fins.
Skate fishery: Commercial and subsistence fishing directed at skate species. Fishing pressure can reduce skate populations, especially where catches are poorly monitored.
Stingray: A ray with a long, usually slender tail bearing one or more venomous serrated spines. Unlike stingrays, skates lack a venomous tail spine and commonly lay egg cases.
