Skeleton (anatomy)

The internal framework of bones and cartilage that supports and protects an animal’s body. It also provides attachment points for muscles and, in many animals, produces blood cells.

Bone: A rigid connective tissue whose mineralized matrix supports the body and protects organs. Its mineralized tissue forms most of the adult human skeleton.
Ossification: The process by which bone tissue forms, either directly or by replacing cartilage. It builds much of the skeleton during development and repair.
Fracture: A break in the continuity of a bone. Fracture diagnosis and treatment depend on the affected bone and its structure.
Exoskeleton: A rigid external covering that supports and protects an animal’s body. Unlike an internal skeleton, it surrounds the body and is shed during growth in many arthropods.
Cartilage: A resilient connective tissue that supports structures and cushions joints. It shapes parts of the skeleton and covers bone ends at many joints.
Bone remodeling: The ongoing replacement of old bone tissue by coordinated resorption and formation. Remodeling renews skeletal tissue and helps it adapt to changing loads.
Osteoporosis: A disease characterized by reduced bone strength and increased fracture risk. It shows how changes in skeletal tissue can weaken the framework.
Hydrostatic skeleton: A support system in which fluid pressure within a body cavity provides structure and enables movement. It supports some animals without bones or a rigid external framework.
Joint: A connection between bones or other skeletal elements that may permit movement. Joints link skeletal elements while allowing different ranges of motion.
Osteoclast: A specialized cell that breaks down bone tissue. Osteoclasts resorb bone as part of remodeling and calcium regulation.
