Skew lines

Skew lines are nonparallel lines in three-dimensional space that do not intersect because they lie in different planes.

Euclidean geometry: The geometry of points, lines, planes, distances, and angles governed by Euclid’s postulates. Its three-dimensional setting supplies the basic objects used to define skewness.
Vector equation of a line: A representation of a line as a point plus scalar multiples of a direction vector. Direction vectors and points provide the data needed to test a pair for skewness.
Three-dimensional coordinate system: A system that locates points in space using three coordinates along perpendicular axes. Coordinates let geometric tests distinguish skew lines from other line pairs.
Intersecting lines in three dimensions: Two lines in three-dimensional space that share a point and therefore lie in a common plane. They fail the nonintersection condition required for skewness.
Line (geometry): A straight, one-dimensional geometric object extending infinitely in both directions. Skewness describes how two lines are positioned relative to each other.
Cross product: A vector operation in three dimensions that produces a vector perpendicular to two input vectors. Its magnitude and direction help calculate the shortest distance between skew lines.
Cube: A regular solid with six square faces, twelve equal edges, and eight vertices. Certain pairs of edges on a cube are canonical examples of skew lines.
Parallel lines in three dimensions: Distinct lines in three-dimensional space with proportional direction vectors that never intersect. They fail the nonparallel condition required for skewness.
Plane (geometry): A flat, two-dimensional surface extending infinitely in three-dimensional space. Skew lines occupy different planes, unlike coplanar line pairs.
Scalar triple product: The scalar product of one vector with the cross product of two others. A nonzero triple product tests whether two direction vectors and their displacement are noncoplanar.
