Ski lift

A mechanical system transports skiers uphill, using suspended chairs or cabins, a moving rope, or a surface tow. Its return trip lets skiers reach higher terrain without climbing.

Aerial lift: A transport system that moves passengers or materials in carriers suspended from cables. Ski lifts with chairs or cabins belong to this broader transport family.
Lift cable: A steel wire rope that supports or moves carriers in a cable transport system. It bears the load and transmits motion along an aerial lift's route.
T-bar lift: A surface lift that tows two skiers at a time using a T-shaped support. It serves slopes where a simple uphill tow is practical.
Ski touring: A form of skiing in which participants climb uphill on skis and descend without relying on resort lifts. It replaces mechanical uphill transport with human-powered travel.

Cable car grip: A device that connects a carrier to a moving cable, either permanently or temporarily. The grip determines whether a chair stays attached or detaches at a station.
J-bar lift: A surface lift that tows one skier using a J-shaped support. Its single-person tow is a compact option for short or beginner slopes.
Snowcat: A tracked vehicle designed to travel over snow, used for grooming slopes and transporting people or equipment. Snowcats can reach terrain without a lift, but do not provide continuous passenger circulation.
Fixed-grip chairlift: A chairlift whose carriers remain attached to the moving cable throughout the circuit. Its simpler grip system means chairs pass stations at the cable's full speed.
Lift tower: A supporting structure that carries cables above the ground along an aerial lift route. Towers hold the cable clear of terrain and maintain its alignment between stations.
