Skiffle

Skiffle is a British popular music style of the 1950s, blending folk, blues, and jazz with energetic rhythms and often improvised instruments.

Tea-chest bass: A simple string bass made by attaching a broomstick and string to an inverted tea chest. Its amplified plucked string supplied the bass line in many skiffle groups.
Lonnie Donegan: A Scottish-born British singer and guitarist known as the leading figure in the 1950s skiffle boom. His 1956 hit “Rock Island Line” brought skiffle to a mass audience.
The Quarrymen: A Liverpool skiffle group formed in 1956 by John Lennon and school friends. The group began as a skiffle outfit before evolving into the Beatles.
British rock and roll: A British popular music movement that adapted American rock and roll during the 1950s. Skiffle's guitar-led energy helped lead young British musicians toward rock and roll.
