Skin grafting

Skin grafting is surgery that transfers skin from a donor site to cover a wound or skin defect. The graft survives by establishing a blood supply from the recipient bed.

Graft take: Graft take is the successful attachment and survival of transplanted tissue at its recipient site. It describes the outcome of the stages that allow a skin graft to survive.
Split-thickness skin graft: A split-thickness skin graft contains the epidermis and part of the dermis. Its limited thickness lets it cover broad wounds and heal at the donor site.
Burn surgery: Burn surgery treats tissue damage caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, or radiation. Skin grafting is a common way to close deep burns that cannot heal promptly on their own.
Skin flap: A skin flap is tissue transferred to cover a defect while retaining or gaining its own blood supply. Unlike a free skin graft, a flap brings vascularized tissue to the defect.
Plasmatic imbibition: Plasmatic imbibition is the early diffusion of nutrients from a recipient bed into a newly placed graft. This initial nourishment supports the graft before its circulation is restored.
Full-thickness skin graft: A full-thickness skin graft contains the epidermis and the entire dermis. It transfers more dermis than a split-thickness graft and is used for selected defects.
Chronic wound: A chronic wound is a wound that fails to progress through normal healing within an expected time. Grafting may be considered after the wound bed is prepared and underlying causes are addressed.
Secondary intention healing: Secondary intention healing closes a wound through granulation, contraction, and epithelial growth without surgical closure. It avoids transferring skin but can require longer healing and leave a different scar.
Inosculation: Inosculation is the connection of blood vessels in transplanted tissue with vessels in the recipient bed. These vascular connections help re-establish circulation in a free skin graft.
Autograft: An autograft is tissue transferred from one location to another within the same person. Skin taken from the patient's own body is the standard graft source.
