Skylab

Skylab was the United States’ first space station, occupied by three crews between 1973 and 1974. It supported long-duration human spaceflight, scientific experiments, and observations of the Sun and Earth.

Saturn V: A heavy-lift rocket developed by NASA to launch Apollo missions and place Skylab in orbit. Its final launch placed the station in orbit in May 1973.
Apollo Telescope Mount: A set of solar telescopes and instruments carried by Skylab for observations of the Sun. It enabled extensive observations across visible, ultraviolet, and X-ray wavelengths.
Apollo Applications Program: A NASA program that planned missions using Apollo spacecraft and hardware after the lunar landings. Skylab became the program’s largest crewed project.
Skylab reentry: The uncontrolled atmospheric return of Skylab in July 1979, which scattered debris across parts of Western Australia and the Indian Ocean. The station’s declining orbit ended the program and raised questions about controlling large spacecraft disposal.
Apollo Command and Service Module: The spacecraft that carried astronauts to and from lunar orbit and later ferried crews to Skylab. It served as the crew transport vehicle for all three Skylab expeditions.
Earth Resources Technology Satellite: A NASA satellite launched in 1972 to test remote sensing of Earth’s land and water. Skylab crews photographed Earth to investigate how orbital observation could aid resource studies.
Saturn Workshop: A space station concept made by converting a Saturn rocket stage into an orbital living and working volume. The station’s main habitable volume was a converted Saturn V third stage.
Salyut 1: The first space station, launched by the Soviet Union in 1971 and occupied by one crew. It preceded Skylab, offering a different early approach to sustained orbital habitation.
Skylab Rescue: A prepared Apollo spacecraft and launch vehicle intended to rescue a Skylab crew if its return vehicle failed. NASA readied this contingency after a crew spacecraft developed a serious propulsion-system leak.
Skylab Medical Experiments Altitude Test: A group of experiments that monitored astronauts’ health and bodily adaptation during Skylab missions. The measurements helped characterize the effects of extended weightlessness on human physiology.
