Slate

Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock that splits into thin sheets along cleavage planes. Its durability and layered structure make it useful as a building and writing material.

Slaty cleavage: A planar fabric in fine-grained metamorphic rock that lets it split into thin, flat sheets. This fabric gives slate its characteristic splitting planes.
Roofing slate: Slate cut into thin, durable pieces for covering roofs. Its cleavage yields overlapping tiles that shed water and resist weathering.
Mudstone: A fine-grained sedimentary rock composed chiefly of clay- and silt-sized particles. Mudstone can become slate when burial and tectonic pressure alter its fabric.
Schist: A medium- to coarse-grained foliated metamorphic rock with visible platy minerals. Schist has larger visible mica grains and generally records higher metamorphic grade.
Metamorphism: The transformation of existing rock through heat, pressure, or chemically active fluids without complete melting. Slate forms when shale or mudstone undergoes low-grade metamorphism.
Slate gravestone: A grave marker made from slate, often bearing carved or painted inscriptions. Slate’s workable surface and durability made it a historic material for gravestones.
Regional metamorphism: Metamorphism affecting large areas, commonly during mountain building and tectonic convergence. Regional pressure and heat commonly transform mudrocks into slate.
Gneiss: A coarse-grained metamorphic rock commonly marked by alternating mineral-rich bands. Gneiss’s coarse banding differs from slate’s fine grain and closely spaced cleavage.
Shale: A fine-grained sedimentary rock formed mainly from compacted mud and clay. Shale is a common precursor whose minerals realign during slate formation.
Slate blackboard: A writing surface made from slate, used with chalk or a slate pencil. Thin slate sheets served as reusable writing boards before paper became widely accessible.
