Slave River

The Slave River flows north from Lake Athabasca through Alberta and the Northwest Territories into Great Slave Lake, continuing the Mackenzie River system.

Athabasca River: A major Alberta river that flows into Lake Athabasca. Its water supplies the lake from which the Slave River begins.
Fort Smith: A town in the Northwest Territories on the Slave River near the Alberta border. The town developed beside the river’s rapids and remains a key access point.
Dene: A group of Indigenous peoples whose homelands span northern Canada and Alaska. Dene communities have lived along and used the river and its surrounding watersheds.
Peace–Athabasca Delta: A large freshwater delta in northeastern Alberta where the Peace and Athabasca rivers meet Lake Athabasca. It connects the Slave River’s upstream lake to a major wetland system.
Lake Athabasca: A large lake on the Alberta–Saskatchewan border and the source of the Slave River. The Slave River carries Lake Athabasca’s outflow northward.
Fort Resolution: A community on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. It lies near the Slave River’s mouth and its entry into the lake.
Slavey: An Indigenous people of the Northwest Territories and northern Alberta, also known as the Dehcho Dene. The river’s English name derives from an exonym historically applied to these peoples.
Wood Buffalo National Park: Canada’s largest national park, extending across northeastern Alberta and the southern Northwest Territories. The park protects landscapes and waters linked to the Slave River basin.
Slave River Rapids: A series of rapids on the Slave River near Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. These rapids interrupt navigation where the river crosses the Canadian Shield.
Slave River Hydro Project: A proposed hydroelectric development on the Slave River in the Northwest Territories. The project would harness the river’s flow while raising concerns about ecological and community impacts.
