Slavic migrations

The movements of Slavic-speaking populations across central, eastern, and southeastern Europe, especially during the sixth and seventh centuries. They reshaped the region’s languages, settlement patterns, and political landscape.

Prague-Korchak culture: An early medieval archaeological culture associated with Slavic-speaking communities across parts of central and eastern Europe. Its sixth- and seventh-century spread is among the clearest archaeological traces linked to Slavic expansion.
Byzantine Empire: The eastern Roman state that endured from late antiquity until the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. Its Balkan frontier became a major zone of Slavic settlement and military conflict.
Great Moravia: A ninth-century Slavic polity in central Europe whose extent and political structure remain debated. It exemplifies the later state formation that followed Slavic settlement in central Europe.
Slavicization: The spread of Slavic languages and cultural practices among populations, with or without large-scale migration. It distinguishes cultural and linguistic change from the physical movement of entire populations.

Balkans: A peninsula in southeastern Europe whose boundaries vary among geographic and historical definitions. Slavic settlement there transformed the population and language map of Byzantine provinces.
First Bulgarian Empire: A medieval state founded in the Balkans in 681, formed through the interaction of Bulgars and Slavic populations. Its development shows how Slavic settlement contributed to a new Balkan polity and language community.
Ethnogenesis: The historical process through which a group forms or reshapes a shared identity. It explains how labels such as Sclaveni could reflect changing identities rather than fixed ancient peoples.
Procopius of Caesarea: A sixth-century Byzantine historian who wrote accounts of Justinian’s wars and the empire’s frontier peoples. His reports describe Sclaveni and Antes raiding Byzantine lands during the period of migration.
Carpathian Basin: A large basin in central Europe centered on the Danube and surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains. It linked central European settlement zones with the Avar polity and routes toward the Balkans.
