Sleight of Hand

Sleight of hand is the concealed manipulation of objects, especially playing cards and coins, to create deceptive effects in magic performances.

Misdirection: The deliberate direction of attention away from a concealed action or relevant event. It gives secret hand movements time to occur unnoticed.
Fingerpalm: A method of concealing a small object at the base of the fingers rather than in the center of the palm. It permits a more relaxed hand shape than many forms of palming.
Card Magic: Magic performances in which playing cards are the principal props. Decks support controls, false shuffles, and concealed substitutions.
Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin: A nineteenth-century French magician often called the father of modern magic. His performances helped establish the modern magician as a skilled theatrical entertainer.
Stage Illusion: A large-scale magic effect that uses theatrical staging, apparatus, or special construction to create an impossible appearance. Unlike close manual concealment, it can rely on scenery and machinery.
Palming: A technique for holding an object concealed against the palm while the hand appears empty or natural. It hides coins and other small objects in plain sight.
Classic Palm: A concealment in which an object is held in the palm by pressure from the hand's muscles. It is a foundational way to retain a coin while keeping the fingers relatively free.
Close-Up Magic: Magic performed at short range, often with spectators gathered around the performer. Nearby spectators make precise concealment and audience management especially important.
S. W. Erdnase: The pseudonymous author of The Expert at the Card Table, a classic work on card technique and deception. His book codified methods and principles that remain influential in card handling.
Mechanical Magic: Magic effects produced primarily by specially designed props or mechanical devices. It locates the secret in apparatus rather than primarily in hand movements.
