Slovakia

Slovakia is a landlocked country in Central Europe, officially the Slovak Republic. Its territory includes much of the Carpathian Mountains and borders five countries.

Carpathian Mountains: A mountain range extending across Central and Eastern Europe, including northern Slovakia. The range shapes Slovakia’s northern landscape, climate, and regional identities.
Great Moravia: A medieval Slavic polity that flourished in parts of present-day Central Europe during the ninth century. Its territory included parts of present-day Slovakia and became a lasting symbol of early Slavic statehood.
European Union: A political and economic union of European countries with shared institutions and common policies. Slovakia joined the union in 2004 and participates in its single market and institutions.
Czech Republic: A landlocked country in Central Europe formed from the Czech lands after Czechoslovakia dissolved. The two countries share a state-building history but have separate governments since 1993.
Danube: Europe’s second-longest river, flowing through or alongside ten countries before reaching the Black Sea. The Danube connects Bratislava and southern Slovakia to major Central European waterways.
Kingdom of Hungary: A European kingdom founded around the turn of the first millennium and lasting in various forms until 1918. Most of present-day Slovakia belonged to this kingdom for centuries.
Eurozone: The group of European Union countries that use the euro as their official currency. Slovakia adopted the euro in 2009, linking its monetary policy to the European Central Bank.
Hungary: A landlocked country in Central Europe bordering Slovakia to the south. Their long shared history contrasts with the modern border separating two sovereign states.
Bratislava: The capital and largest city of Slovakia, situated on the Danube near Austria and Hungary. The capital concentrates national institutions at Slovakia’s southwestern edge.
Slovak National Revival: A nineteenth-century movement that developed Slovak literary language and promoted Slovak national consciousness. Its language reforms and political activism helped establish a modern Slovak national identity.
