Slow motion

Slow motion is a filmmaking technique that presents recorded movement at a slower rate than it occurred, usually by playing footage recorded at a higher frame rate at a standard playback rate.

High-speed photography: Photography that records events at frame rates far above ordinary playback rates. Recording extra frames is the classic way to make later playback appear slower.
Bullet time: A visual effect that creates a moving viewpoint around an action seemingly suspended in time. It combines slowed action with camera movement to make time appear dramatically altered.
Eadweard Muybridge: A nineteenth-century photographer known for sequential images of human and animal movement. His motion studies helped establish photography as a way to analyze rapid action.
Time-lapse photography: A technique that captures images at intervals and plays them back to show long events quickly. It reverses slow motion's temporal effect by compressing elapsed time.
Frame rate: The number of frames a camera records or displays per second. The recording-to-playback frame-rate ratio sets the apparent slowdown.
Sports cinematography: The filming of athletic competition and performance. Slow motion exposes timing, technique, and contact during fast sporting actions.
Étienne-Jules Marey: A French physiologist and inventor who developed photographic methods for studying movement. His chronophotographic devices recorded motion in rapid sequences.
Speed ramping: An editing technique that changes playback speed within a shot or sequence. It moves between normal speed and slow motion rather than sustaining one rate.
Temporal resolution: The ability of a system to distinguish events separated in time. More temporal samples preserve brief movements that ordinary capture misses.
Scientific imaging: The capture and analysis of images to investigate scientific phenomena. High-speed recordings reveal processes too rapid for direct observation.
