Slow slip event

A slow slip event is fault movement lasting days to months that releases accumulated strain with little or no strong shaking.

Fault friction: Frictional resistance that opposes sliding between two surfaces of a fault. Its rate-dependent behavior helps determine whether fault movement is slow or seismic.
Fault (geology): A fracture or fracture zone along which blocks of rock have moved relative to one another. Slow slip is displacement along a fault rather than a separate kind of geological structure.
Cascadia subduction zone: A subduction zone where the Juan de Fuca Plate descends beneath western North America. Recurring slow-slip episodes beneath Cascadia are monitored for their relation to plate-boundary strain.
Aseismic creep: Fault movement that proceeds without producing detectable earthquakes. Creep can be steady, whereas a slow slip event is a distinct episode with a measurable start and finish.
Rate-and-state friction: A law describing how friction changes with sliding speed and the history of contact between surfaces. It models the frictional conditions that can produce stable or episodic slow fault slip.
Elastic rebound theory: The explanation that rocks deform elastically as stress builds and then rebound when a fault slips. Slow slip releases some of the elastic strain that can otherwise accumulate between earthquakes.
Nankai megathrust: A major subduction fault off southwestern Japan where the Philippine Sea Plate descends beneath Japan. Slow slip and tremor there provide observations of processes surrounding a major earthquake source.
Slow earthquake: An earthquake-like rupture that lasts much longer than ordinary earthquakes and radiates little high-frequency energy. The term overlaps with slow slip but emphasizes its earthquake-like rupture character.
Episodic tremor and slip: A recurring pattern of slow fault slip accompanied by bursts of weak seismic tremor. It is a well-studied form of slow slip, especially in subduction zones.
Geodetic measurement: Measurement of Earth’s shape, position, and motion using surveying and space-based techniques. Geodetic records reveal gradual ground motion that may be too weak to detect seismically.
