SNi reaction

An SNi reaction is a nucleophilic substitution in which the departing group and incoming nucleophile react within the same intimate ion pair, often producing retention of configuration.

Intimate ion pair: A cation and anion that remain closely associated after bond cleavage, without full separation into solvent. The substrate-derived cation and departing group stay paired as the nucleophile returns.
SN1 reaction: A unimolecular nucleophilic substitution that proceeds through a carbocation intermediate. Unlike a freely solvated SN1 intermediate, the SNi ion pair can direct nucleophilic return.
Nucleophile: A species that donates an electron pair to form a chemical bond. The nucleophile supplies the bond-forming electrons in the substitution.
Alcohol: An organic compound containing a hydroxyl group bonded to a saturated carbon atom. Alcohols are converted into leaving-group derivatives that can undergo SNi substitution.
Stereochemical retention: Preservation of a stereocenter’s spatial configuration during a chemical transformation. Return of the nucleophile from the leaving-group side can preserve configuration.
SN2 reaction: A concerted nucleophilic substitution in which bond formation and leaving-group departure occur together. SN2 proceeds by backside attack and usually inverts configuration rather than retaining it.
Stereochemistry: The study of the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in molecules and its chemical consequences. SNi’s characteristic retention is a stereochemical outcome.
Thionyl chloride: A reactive inorganic compound, SOCl₂, used to convert alcohols into alkyl chlorides. Its reaction with some alcohols proceeds through an ion pair associated with SNi behavior.
Solvent-cage effect: The temporary confinement of newly formed species within a surrounding shell of solvent molecules. Solvent organization can help keep the ion pair together during substitution.
SN1cB reaction: A substitution mechanism involving conjugate-base formation followed by loss of a leaving group. It offers a different stepwise route to substitution, involving deprotonation rather than intimate-ion-pair return.
