Sobhuza II

Sobhuza II was king of Swaziland from 1921 until 1982. His reign spanned British colonial rule, independence in 1968, and the establishment of an absolute monarchy.

Swaziland: A landlocked country in Southern Africa, renamed Eswatini in 2018. The kingdom Sobhuza ruled became independent Swaziland in 1968.
Ngwane V: King of Swaziland from 1895 until his death in 1899, and Sobhuza II’s father. His death led to Sobhuza’s accession as an infant.

Independence of Swaziland: The end of British colonial rule in Swaziland and the country’s emergence as an independent state in 1968. Sobhuza became head of state when the country gained independence.
Labotsibeni Mdluli: Swazi queen mother who served as regent during Sobhuza II’s minority. She governed before Sobhuza assumed full royal responsibilities.
Prince Makhosini Dlamini: Swazi political leader who served as the country’s first prime minister after independence. His premiership formed part of the independent government Sobhuza later displaced.
Imbokodvo National Movement: A political movement founded in Swaziland in 1964 that supported the monarchy and won every seat in the 1967 election. It provided an electoral vehicle for monarchical politics before independence.
1968 Swazi Constitution: The constitution that established Swaziland’s constitutional monarchy at independence. It initially defined the constitutional framework under which Sobhuza reigned.
Swaziland under British rule: The period when Swaziland was administered under British authority before independence in 1968. For nearly half his reign, Sobhuza ruled within British colonial structures.
