Social anarchism

Social anarchism is a branch of anarchism that emphasizes cooperation, collective ownership or control, and nonhierarchical organization. It seeks to replace both state authority and exploitative economic hierarchies with forms of social self-management.

Anarchism: A political philosophy opposing imposed hierarchy and advocating voluntary, nonhierarchical forms of association. Social anarchism is one major current within anarchism.
Individualist anarchism: Anarchist thought that gives priority to individual autonomy and often rejects collective social arrangements. It places greater emphasis on individual sovereignty than social anarchism typically does.
Pierre-Joseph Proudhon: A French political thinker whose writings helped establish modern anarchism and mutualist economics. His critique of property and advocacy of workers’ association influenced later social anarchists.
Anarcho-syndicalism: A labor movement strategy that uses worker-run unions and direct action to challenge capitalism and the state. It applies social anarchist aims through workplace organization and labor struggle.
Spanish Revolution of 1936: A revolutionary transformation in parts of Spain following the military uprising of July 1936. Social anarchist organizations helped drive its collectivization and community self-management.
Mutual aid: Cooperation among people who support one another through reciprocal assistance. It describes the cooperative practice social anarchists use to meet shared needs.
Anarcho-capitalism: A political ideology advocating the abolition of the state alongside private property and market-based governance. Its defense of private property and markets conflicts with social anarchism’s anti-capitalist currents.
Mikhail Bakunin: A Russian revolutionary and anarchist theorist who opposed both state authority and centralized Marxist organization. His collectivist anarchism became a formative current in social anarchism.
Libertarian municipalism: A political program of building directly democratic local assemblies and federating them across communities. It translates social anarchist self-government into a municipal strategy.
Confederación Nacional del Trabajo: A Spanish anarcho-syndicalist labor confederation founded in 1910. It became a major vehicle for social anarchist organizing in Spain.
