Social commentary

Social commentary is artistic or public expression that examines social conditions, institutions, or norms. It can expose injustice, challenge prevailing beliefs, or invite debate.

Satire: A mode of expression that uses humor, irony, or exaggeration to expose folly or wrongdoing. Its distortions make social conventions and abuses visible.
A Modest Proposal: Jonathan Swift's 1729 satirical essay that proposes an appalling solution to poverty in Ireland. Its deadpan proposal indicts exploitation and indifference toward the poor.
Enlightenment: An intellectual movement of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that emphasized reason, criticism, and reform. Its ideals helped make scrutiny of inherited authority a public project.
Propaganda: Communication designed to influence attitudes or behavior, often by selective presentation of information. Commentary may persuade, but it need not serve an organized campaign or suppress complexity.
Public sphere: A social arena where people discuss shared concerns and form public opinion. Commentary circulates through this arena and supplies subjects for debate.
Allegory: A narrative or image whose characters and events carry a sustained second meaning. It can encode criticism of institutions in an indirect story.
Uncle Tom's Cabin: Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 antislavery novel depicting the violence of slavery in the United States. Its narrative made slavery's human costs central to public debate.
Jonathan Swift: An Anglo-Irish writer and cleric known for political writing and works of satire. His essay A Modest Proposal remains a model of indirect social attack.
Social documentary: Photographic or filmic work that records social conditions, often with an explicit concern for reform. It overlaps with commentary but places greater emphasis on documenting actual conditions.
Agenda-setting theory: A theory that media influence which issues people regard as important by emphasizing some topics over others. Repeated depictions can raise a social problem's visibility without dictating opinions.
