Social construction of technology

An approach that explains how technologies take shape through social groups’ interpretations, negotiations, and choices rather than through technical necessity alone.

Interpretive flexibility: The capacity of an artifact to carry different meanings and solve different problems for different social groups. Different groups can define the same technology’s problems and purposes in conflicting ways.
Science and technology studies: An interdisciplinary field examining how science and technology interact with society, politics, and culture. Social construction of technology is a major approach within this field.
Trevor Pinch: A British sociologist of science who helped formulate the social construction of technology approach. His work with Wiebe Bijker set out the approach’s foundational concepts.
