Social deduction game

A multiplayer game in which players use discussion, observation, and deception to identify opponents with hidden roles or objectives.

Hidden role: A game role whose identity or abilities are concealed from some or all players. Concealed roles create the uncertainty players must resolve through discussion and observation.
Mafia (party game): A group game in which a hidden mafia faction secretly eliminates townspeople while the town investigates and votes. Its day-and-night structure became a defining model for social deduction.
Game theory: The mathematical study of strategic interaction among decision-makers. Players choose actions while anticipating opponents who are also adapting strategically.
Murder mystery game: A game in which participants investigate a fictional crime by gathering clues and identifying its perpetrator. Unlike many social deduction games, it centers on a fixed mystery rather than opposing hidden teams.
Bluffing: Deceptive communication intended to make others believe a false claim or misjudge a player's intentions. Players may misrepresent their identity, knowledge, or objectives to protect their side.
Werewolf (party game): A social deduction game in which villagers identify werewolves who secretly remove players at night. It adapts Mafia's hidden-faction conflict with a widely recognized theme and roles.
Deductive reasoning: Reasoning that derives conclusions from stated premises and rules. Role constraints and observed actions can rule out particular explanations.
Hidden movement game: A game in which one or more players conceal their locations while others attempt to track them. Its uncertainty concerns position and pursuit, not necessarily identity revealed through social claims.
Voting system: A procedure for aggregating votes into a collective decision or outcome. Votes often determine whom the group eliminates or investigates.
The Resistance (game): A hidden-role game in which spies sabotage missions while resistance members try to complete them. Mission proposals and secret sabotage votes make allegiance the central puzzle.
