Social desirability bias

Social desirability bias is the tendency to give answers that seem acceptable or favorable to others rather than answers that accurately reflect one’s beliefs or behavior.

Impression management: The deliberate or unconscious effort to shape how others perceive oneself. Respondents may tailor answers to present a favorable image.
Survey methodology: The principles and techniques used to design, conduct, and analyze surveys. Survey researchers account for this bias when measuring attitudes and behavior.
Response bias: A systematic tendency to answer questions inaccurately in a way that affects measurement. Social desirability is one specific form of systematic response distortion.
Measurement error: The difference between a measured value and the quantity it is intended to measure. Socially shaped answers create systematic error in self-reported measures.
Social norm: A shared expectation about how members of a group should behave. Perceived norms supply the standards respondents may try to satisfy.
Self-deception: The process of maintaining a belief despite evidence that challenges it, often without conscious awareness. Some socially desirable answers reflect genuinely distorted self-perception, not deliberate concealment.
Self-report study: A study that collects information participants provide about their own experiences, attitudes, or behavior. Self-reports are vulnerable when respondents favor acceptable answers.
Recall bias: A systematic error caused by differences in how people remember or report past events. Faulty memory, rather than social approval, drives this reporting error.
Underreporting: Reporting fewer instances or a lower amount than actually occurred. Disapproved behaviors are often reported less frequently than they occur.
Social approval: Positive evaluation or acceptance from other people for one’s actions or views. The prospect of approval can make certain answers more attractive.
