Social disorganization theory

Social disorganization theory explains neighborhood crime through weakened local social relationships and limited capacity for residents to achieve shared goals, especially informal social control.

Collective efficacy: A neighborhood’s shared trust and willingness to intervene for common goals, including maintaining public order. It explains how social ties can translate into residents’ capacity to control crime.
Chicago School (sociology): A sociological tradition centered at the University of Chicago that studied urban life through empirical field research. Its urban ecology research supplied the intellectual setting for the theory.
Strain theory: A family of theories explaining crime through pressure created by blocked or unequal access to socially valued goals. It emphasizes pressures on individuals rather than neighborhood capacity for social control.
Collective efficacy and violence: A 1997 study by Robert Sampson, Stephen Raudenbush, and Felton Earls linking collective efficacy with lower violence. The study gave the theory a prominent empirical test using Chicago neighborhoods.
