Social documentary photography

Photography that depicts social conditions to build public understanding or encourage reform. It combines visual record with an explicit concern for people’s circumstances.

Photojournalism: The practice of reporting news and public affairs through photographs. Both document public life, but social documentary often develops a sustained argument beyond a single news event.
Jacob Riis: A Danish-American journalist and photographer whose work exposed poverty in New York City tenements. His illustrated lectures and book brought slum conditions before a broad American public.
Dorothea Lange: An American documentary photographer known for images of migration and poverty during the Great Depression. Her FSA photographs made displacement and hardship legible through individual portraits.
