Social exclusion

Social exclusion is the process by which people or groups are prevented from participating fully in social, economic, cultural, or political life.

Discrimination: Unequal treatment of people based on traits such as race, sex, disability, or religion. Discriminatory treatment can block access to jobs, services, and public life.
Social determinants of health: The social and economic conditions that shape health risks and outcomes. Exclusion from resources and institutions contributes to unequal health outcomes.
Social exclusion (sociology): A sociological concept describing processes that marginalize people from social relationships and institutions. This framework emphasizes exclusion as a relational process, not simply a lack of income.
Social inclusion: The condition and process of enabling people to participate fully in society. Inclusion is the policy goal commonly set against social exclusion.
Marginalization: The process of pushing people or groups toward the social, economic, or political margins. Marginalization overlaps with exclusion but stresses a position at society’s edges.
Institutional racism: Policies and practices within institutions that produce or sustain racial disadvantage. Institutional rules can exclude racialized groups even without explicit individual prejudice.
Health inequity: An avoidable, unfair difference in health between social groups. Barriers to care and social resources can translate exclusion into preventable illness.
European Union: A political and economic union of European member states. European policy debates helped establish social exclusion as a major public-policy framework.
Universal basic income: A regular cash payment made unconditionally to each member of a political community. Unconditional income is proposed as a way to reduce material barriers to participation.
Social mobility: Movement of individuals or groups between positions in a social hierarchy. Mobility concerns movement between positions; exclusion concerns blocked participation.
