Social psychology

Social psychology studies how actual, imagined, or implied social contexts shape people’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior. It examines individuals in relation to other people and groups.

Conformity: Conformity is the adjustment of beliefs or behavior toward a group’s norms or expectations. Group pressure can shift public responses even when private judgments remain unchanged.
Social cognition: Social cognition is the mental processing of information about people, relationships, and social situations. It names the information-processing domain that social psychology investigates.
Norman Triplett: Norman Triplett was an American psychologist whose 1898 study examined performance in the presence of others. His study of cyclists is often cited as an early social psychology experiment.
Asch conformity experiments: The Asch conformity experiments tested whether participants would match a group’s clearly incorrect line judgments. They demonstrated that unanimous group judgments can sway individual responses.
Persuasion: Persuasion is communication intended to change another person’s beliefs, attitudes, or behavior. Research on attitude change informs models of how messages influence people.
Obedience: Obedience is behavior that follows a command from an authority figure. It isolates how perceived authority can shape action within a social setting.
Attitude: An attitude is an evaluation of a person, object, idea, or event. Attitudes connect social judgments with intentions and behavior.
Kurt Lewin: Kurt Lewin was a psychologist who developed field theory and helped establish modern social psychology. His account of behavior as person–environment interaction shaped the field’s framework.
Robbers Cave experiment: The Robbers Cave experiment studied the formation and reduction of conflict between groups of boys at a summer camp. It tested how competition and shared goals affect intergroup relations.
Stereotype: A stereotype is a generalized belief about the characteristics of members of a social group. Stereotypes illustrate how social categorization shapes expectations and judgment.
