Socialism

Socialism is a family of political and economic theories advocating social or public ownership of productive resources. Its variants differ over how ownership, planning, markets, and political power should be organized.

Means of production: The resources and tools used to produce goods and services, including land, factories, machinery, and infrastructure. Socialist theories focus on who owns and controls these productive resources.
Social democracy: A political tradition pursuing equality and social protection through democratic institutions and a regulated market economy. It often seeks socialist goals through reforms without abolishing private ownership of most firms.
Industrial Revolution: The period of rapid mechanization and factory growth that began in Britain in the eighteenth century and spread elsewhere. Industrial labor conditions and new concentrations of wealth helped spur socialist movements.
Trade union: An organization of workers formed to represent members in negotiations with employers. Unions have pursued socialist aims through collective bargaining and political organization.
Welfare state: A system in which public institutions provide social protection and services such as healthcare, pensions, or unemployment support. Socialist and labor movements helped press for protections later incorporated into welfare states.
Private property: A system of legally recognized individual or corporate rights to possess, use, and transfer property. Socialist arguments distinguish personal possessions from private ownership of productive assets.
Communism: A political ideal of a classless society with common ownership of productive resources. Many socialist traditions treat communism as a possible endpoint, while others reject that framework.
Robert Owen: A Welsh industrialist and social reformer who promoted cooperative communities and improved factory conditions. Owen helped establish early cooperative experiments associated with utopian socialism.
Cooperative: An enterprise or association owned and democratically controlled by its members. Cooperatives put collective ownership into practice without requiring state ownership.
Eight-hour day: A labor standard limiting a normal workday to eight hours. Socialist and union campaigns made the shorter working day a central labor demand.
