Socialist International

The Socialist International is a worldwide organization of socialist, social-democratic, and labour political parties, founded in 1951 as the successor to the Second International.

Second International: An association of socialist parties founded in 1889 that coordinated international labour and socialist activity until its collapse during World War I. The Socialist International was founded to renew this earlier organization’s international party network.
Socialist International Council: The Socialist International’s governing body, which brings together representatives of member parties between congresses. The council coordinates the organization’s work between its larger congresses.
Willy Brandt: A German social-democratic politician who served as West Germany’s chancellor from 1969 to 1974 and chaired the Socialist International from 1976 to 1992. His long chairmanship made him a defining figure in the organization’s late twentieth-century history.
Social democracy: A political tradition that seeks social equality and democratic government, commonly through reform and a regulated market economy. It is the main political tradition represented across the organization’s member parties.
International Workingmen’s Association: A federation of labour organizations founded in 1864, also known as the First International. It established an early model for cross-border cooperation among socialist movements.
Socialist International Congress: A gathering of Socialist International member parties that sets political direction and elects organizational leadership. Congresses provide the main forum for members to debate shared positions and priorities.
Pierre Mauroy: A French Socialist politician who served as prime minister from 1981 to 1984 and chaired the Socialist International from 1992 to 1999. His leadership followed Brandt’s and reflected the organization’s European political networks.
Internationalism: The principle that political cooperation across national borders can address shared interests and problems. The organization applies this principle by coordinating parties across countries.
World War II: A global war fought from 1939 to 1945 that reshaped political institutions and alliances. The postwar reorganization of socialist parties created the conditions for the organization’s founding.
Socialist International Secretariat: The administrative office that supports the Socialist International’s governing bodies and international activities. The secretariat carries out continuing work between meetings of member parties.
